Most kids already have an account

The government just put $1,000 toward your child's future.

Trump Accounts are Section 530A custodial IRAs for kids under 18, created by the 2025 tax law and officially launched July 4, 2026. On October 1, 2026, the U.S. Treasury opened one for every eligible child with a Social Security number. Bank of New York Mellon manages the funds, invested in the S&P 500 at a 0.02% fee, locked until your child turns 18. Here's how to claim your child's account and request the seed money, in plain language.

What it is & who qualifies

What is a Trump Account, and does your child qualify?

A Trump Account is a Section 530A custodial-style traditional IRA for children under 18, created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Accounts officially launched July 4, 2026. On October 1, 2026, Treasury automatically enrolled more than 60 million children, so most kids already have an account waiting to be claimed. The U.S. Treasury creates and administers the accounts, and Bank of New York Mellon manages the funds. The child is the legal owner and beneficiary, and a parent or guardian administers the account as custodian until the child turns 18.

Who can have one

Any U.S. child under 18 with a Social Security number can have a Trump Account. Children who had one by October 1, 2026 were enrolled automatically, and a parent or guardian claims the account for free. Each child is limited to one funded Trump Account.

The $1,000 federal seed

The U.S. Treasury makes a one-time deposit of $1,000 for U.S. citizen children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028. It takes two steps: claim the account (or open it, for a child born after October 1, 2026), then make the separate seed election. Claiming alone doesn't release the $1,000. Children born outside that window can still claim or open an account without the seed money.

More money, based on where you live

The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation pledged $6.25 billion to deposit $250 into the accounts of up to 25 million children age 10 or younger, born before January 1, 2025, who live in ZIP codes with median income of $150,000 or less (these children don't qualify for the $1,000 federal seed). Beyond Dell, a growing list of employers and philanthropic partners are adding money too. Use the ZIP match tool below to check your child's exact eligibility, and check the tracker as new contributors are added.

Extra $250

An extra $250 for lower-income ZIP codes

A $250 Dell Foundation charitable deposit is available for up to 25 million children age 10 or younger (born before January 1, 2025) living in ZIP codes with median income below $150,000. Enter your ZIP code and your child's date of birth to see if your child qualifies.

Income data: ACS 5-Year Estimates, 2020-2024, U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates. ZIP-level medians are area estimates for a whole ZIP code, not a measure of your household's income.

Stay safe

Protect yourself from scams

Treasury will never call or text you about a Trump Account. Real emails come only from no-reply@TrumpAccounts.Treasury.gov. Never share passwords or one-time codes. Always type TrumpAccounts.gov directly into your browser.

Take action

Claim your child's account in six steps

Most kids already have an account: on October 1, 2026, Treasury opened one for every eligible child with a Social Security number. Claiming it is free, and you manage it as custodian until your child turns 18.

1

Check for your child's account

If your child had a Social Security number by October 1, 2026, Treasury already opened a Trump Account for them. Until you claim it, no one can see the balance, contributions can't land, and the $1,000 seed isn't paid.

2

Get the official app

Download the Trump Accounts app on the App Store or Google Play, or go to trumpaccount.com. On a phone, the website sends you to the app.

3

Verify who you are

Confirm your identity and your relationship to, or legal authority over, your child.

4

Review and accept

Review your child's account information and accept the account terms. There's no deadline. The first authorized adult to finish claiming controls the account, so co-parents should agree on who claims.

5

Request the $1,000 seed

Born 2025-2028? Claiming alone doesn't release the $1,000; the seed requires its own separate election. Some kids 10 and under may also receive $250 from the Dell Foundation in eligible ZIP codes.

6

Contribute, if you want to

Optional. Once the account is claimed, family and friends can add up to $5,000/year combined; employers can add up to $2,500/year within that cap. Set recurring contributions in the app.

Born, or got a Social Security number, after October 1, 2026?

Your child wasn't auto-enrolled, so open their account with an election instead: file IRS Form 4547 with your tax return, online through your IRS account, or in the Trump Accounts app or at trumpaccount.com. One account per child. Then watch for the activation email, which comes only from no-reply@TrumpAccounts.Treasury.gov, and activate the account in the app. The $1,000 seed is a separate election on the same form.

Shotwell's 2M+ SpaceX shares head to escrow; first tranche hits Trump Accounts in December

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said the more than 2 million SpaceX shares she and her husband Robert pledged in July are now transferring to escrow and will be distributed to children's Trump Accounts in December. The initial gift goes to 11- to 17-year-olds living in ZIP codes with a median family income of $57,000 or less (plus ZIPs too small for the Census to report income), with families receiving notices by Nov. 2. A second gift, to be finalized within weeks, will cover eligible 11–17-year-olds in military families serving overseas, children in foster care, and children in counties near the Shotwells' Texas home with median family income of $90,000 or less. Because the 11–17 cohort gets no federal seed, the stock will be the first asset in many of these accounts. Greater Horizons, the Dell Foundation, Invest America, Treasury and the IRS helped structure the transfer.

At an Oval Office event with Michael and Susan Dell and Brad Gerstner, the White House said nearly 70 million Trump Accounts now exist (60M+ via automatic enrollment) and more than $4.5 billion has been deposited since July 4: $1.3 billion in $1,000 Treasury seeds, over $600 million from family and friends, and $2.6 billion in philanthropic gifts. More than 70 companies have committed employee contributions, and an estimated 80% of accounts belong to families earning under $200,000. Michael Dell said 10 million accounts had received the Dells' $250 as of that morning, with all 25 million funded by week's end; IRS CEO Frank Bisignano told CNBC on Oct. 8 that multiple nine-figure 'mega' stock gifts are in the pipeline under the new donation rules.

Treasury completes automatic enrollment: 60M+ more children now have Trump Accounts

Treasury announced that every eligible child under 18 with a valid Social Security number now has a Trump Account, after a single nationwide bulk election auto-enrolled more than 60 million children who had not opted in — on top of the 7–8 million already signed up. Accounts are held in a Treasury-administered master trust until a parent or guardian claims them via the Trump Accounts app; claiming is required to receive the $1,000 seed and to accept family, employer, or philanthropic deposits. IRS CEO Frank Bisignano said Oct. 2 that about 72 companies have pledged matches and up to 25 million accounts could be funded by mid-October.

Treasury and IRS issue temporary regulations authorizing auto-enrollment

Temporary regulations (T.D. 10056) and a concurrent proposed rule under IRC §530A let the Treasury Secretary make the account election on behalf of eligible children with no prior election on file, creating 'auto accounts' through a Treasury-selected trustee with no parent action required. Treasury said it will run periodic enrollment rounds for newly identified children (about 2 million per future birth-year cohort) and the rules also formalize acceptance of publicly traded stock donations. The regulations took effect Sept. 30.
